Abstract
Urea is subjected to high ammonia NH3-N volatilization loss. Controlled release ureaCRU can be used to reduce this loss. This study was conducted to determine the effect of CRU on NH3-N loss. This study investigates the NH3-N volatilization losses from CRU as compared to urea fertilizer under laboratory condition. The CRU used CDU Uber-l0 Meister-20 Meister-27 and Duration Type-V were applied on the surface of soils. Ammonia volatilization losses from surface applied urea on Serdang series Rengam series Selangor series and Holyrood series soil were determined for duration of 70 days using the force draft technique. The percentage NH3-N loss between the CRU and urea fertilizer was found to be significantly different. The higher N loss was caused by the rapid hydrolysis which increases soil pH. The CRU treatments were effective in reducing NH3-N volatilization loss. The losses were reduced from 50 to less than 10 using CRU. Thus we conclude that surface application of CRU in sandy clay loam and clayey soil reduces NH3-N volatilization.
