Abstract
The exponential growth of the worlds population is critically straining the earths ability to support mankind. Thus there is need to control human fertility with a safe simple effective and inexpensive remedy. Development of new method of fertility regulation for plants an attractive proposition. In this study phyllanthus amarus aqueous extract was given orally to male rats to evaluate its effect on male reproductive function. The freeze-dried extract was dissolved in distilled water and fed to the rats 50 100 250 and 500mg/kg body weight daily for 90 days. The extract was able to lower the fertility index of the 100 250 and 500 mg/kg b.w group but the litter size was not affected. The testicular and epididymal weight were significantly reduce for the 500mg/kg b.w group but other treatment group consistently showed lower sperm viability but not motility. sperm morphology was also observed to normal after extract treatment. The testicular cholesterol level were not significantly different compare to control although all treatment group showed consistently higher levels. The mean volumetric proportion MVP of testicular spermatozoa was significantly lower after 90 days only for the 500mg/kg group. These results suggest that Phyllanthus amarus aqueous extract had a mild inhibitory effect on the male reproductive function culminating in lower sperm count after 90 days of treatment.
