Abstract

A study was carried out on a Malaysian traditional herb Labisia pumila var. alata used by the Malay women in childbirth. The plant is locally called kacip Fatimah and its water decoction is given before childbirth to ease delivery. Recently the fresh plant of kacip Fatimah was reported to cause contact dermatitis. A TROLAB patch test was carried out to observe the allergic reaction on a human subject. A number of standard chemical reagents known to cause irritation and blistering of the skin as well as the leaf and root of L. pumila var. alata were patched onto the skin. After 48 h slight blisters were observed on patches containing nickel sulphate 5 and kacip Fatimah root. The condition aggravated after 96 h and slight blisters were also observed with the leaf. This would mean that the kacip Fatimah leaf and root could cause dermatitis to hypersensitive individuals. Therefore it is highly recommended to include a warning label on every products containing L. pumila so that consumers are well informed of the possible side effects.
