Abstract
The increasing demand for herbal products and natural food supplements is a promising prospect to venture into the herbal business. However an intensive integrated research has to be carried out on selected species before they are promoted for large scale commercial planting. Good management practices and integrated production concept should also be adopted. Since most of the herbs in Malaysia are collected from the wild it is indeed timely to increase efforts in cultivation breeding and selection. Research should be focussed on solving agronomic and post-harvest problems. Small-scale l;ultivation plots should be set up for research purposes as the initial step towards commercial planting. In this study the development of agronomic techniques of five herbal species Melaleuca alternifolia tea tree oil Cymbopogon nardus serai wangi Pogostemon cablin nilam Eurycoma longifolia tongkat Ali and Morinda citrifolia mengkudu are discussed.
