Abstract

The retrovirus family is characterised by the presence of reverse transcriptase enzyme in the virion. It is an essential enzyme required for the unique retroviral type of multiplication. A total of 30 aqueous extracts from 26 species of herbs consumed as ulam were evaluated for their inhibitory effect on the polymerase activity of reverse transcriptase. The leaf extracts of Diplazium esculentum and Pluchea indica at a concentration of 500 J.lg/ml showed strong inhibitory effect on the reverse transcriptase activity with percentage inhibition of more than 95. The ICso values obtained for D. esculentum and P. indica were 54.06 J.lg/ml and 92.91 J.lg/ml respectively.
