Abstract

The whole plant of Hydnophytum formicarium Jack Rubiaceae locally known as Sanola was extracted using both polar and non-polar solvents. The crude extracts were tested in vitro for anti-proliferative activity. Results showed that methanolic n-butanolic and aqueous crude extracts showed anti-proliferative effect towards Caov-3 ovarian cancer and KB-IV epidermoid carcinoma weak against DU-154 prostate cancer and MCF-7 breast cancer and interestingly no effect on normal cells MDBK and Vero cells. For the mode of action study the methanolic extract was tested for its effect on apoptosis on human ovarian cancer cell line Caov-3 using TUNEL assay. The results indicated that cell death was achieved through the mechanism of apoptosis.
