Abstract

Traditional medicines have been used for many years for prevention and treatment of diseases throughout the world. Problems and difficulties arise in the quality assurance of traditional medicinal products due to the many unidentified chemical entities as well as the actual active components in the finished products. Heavy metal toxicity in traditional medicines is very common and often causes serious problems to the patient. In Malaysia all traditional medicines in the market must be registered with the National Pharmaceutical Control Bureau NPCB. Being within the permitted limit of a selected range of heavy metals is one of the major criteria for the registration.Present study shows the comparison of different sample preparation method for metal ion detection in traditional medicines using flame atomic absorption spectroscopy technique FAAS. Hollow cathode lamp was used as a radiation source and air acetylene mixture was used for the flame. The wavelength for lead and cadmium were 283.3 and 228.8 respectively. Sample preparation steps involved acid digestion of the samples using two different digestion methods namely nitric-hydrochloric acid and nitric-perchloric acid digestion. Twenty three traditional medicine samples used as a cure for different illness were analysed for the presence of lead and cadmium. Of the two digestion processes nitric-perchloric acid digestion process showed better result than nitric-hydrochloric acid digestion method. Four of them showed absence of lead and six showed absence of cadmium in both digestion systems.
