Abstract
Diarrhoea is one of the principal causes of death particularly in the malnourished infants. In order to combat the problems of diarrhoea globally the World Health Organisation in its Diarrhoeal Disease Control programme has given a special emphasis on the use of traditional folklore medicines in the control and management of diarrhea. Melastoma malabathricum L. Melastomaceae is an erect shrub or small tree 1.5 to 5 m tall found more or less everywhere throughout Malaysia. It is commonly known as Straits Rhododendron and locally known as Senduduk. This herbaceous plant was traditionally used to treat diarrhea. In this study the anti-diarrhoeal effects of the water extract of M. malabathricum leaves MMW were investigated by employing four experimental models of diarrhoea in Swiss albino mice. Mice treated with various concentrations 100 200 and 500 mg/kg p.o. showed significant p 0.05 reduction in the feacal output and protection from castor oil-induced diarrhea. The extract also significantly reduced p0.05 intestinal fluid secretion induced by MgSO4 and gastrointestinal motility after charcoal meal administration in the albino mice. No.mortality and visible signs of general weakness was observed in the mice following the test extract administration up to 2000 mg/kg dosage. These results were also compared with the standard drug loperamide 5 mg/kg.
