Abstract
An ethnomedical study was carried out to gather information on the use of medicinal plants in the region of Damansara Damai West Malaysia in order to evaluate the potential of local plants used in treating different diseases and illness. A total of 112 informants ranging from 35 to 60 years old were interviewed using an earlier prepared questionnaire. The majority of the remedies were prepared from a single species of plant materials that was usually freshly collected from the wild or gardens. Some applications were prepared with a mixture of plants or other ingredients such as honey and wine. They were mainly taken orally. Decoction of the plants was the main form of preparation 57.8. Whole plant was most frequently used 44.6 followed by the different parts of the plants. The most used plant part was leaf 26.5. The survey showed that majority of the population in this area was still dependent on medicinal plants. As the first ethanomedical study conducted in this area the results from this work were expected to open up for more studies to scientifically evaluate the biological and toxicological action of the plants.
