(2009) Optimisation of water extraction process in obtaining hydroxycitric acid from Garcinia atroviridis asam gelugor. [Proceedings Paper]
Abstract
Hydroxycitric acid HCA a bioactive compound found in Garcinia spp. is a potent inhibitory of fatty acid and cholesterol synthesis. Studies have shown that HCA decrease weight by inhibiting lipogenesis; the metabolic process that changes carbohydrate into fat. HCA also lowers blood lipid levels. Because it reduces both lipid synthesis and appetite HCA is believed to be a potentially useful agent for producing a weight control herbal product in the futnre. HCA can be extracted out by using the water extraction process. However the extraction parameters such as temperatnre dnration and solid-to-water ratio were found to have a significant influence in obtaining the yield and HCA content. Therefore optimization of the extraction process was carried out to develop a generalized approach for aqueous extract preparation of G. atroviridis with optimal extraction yield aud HCA content. Results revealed that the best extraction parameters to obtain the highest yield and HCA from G. atroviridis were as followed: temperatnre 100C; solid-to-water ratio at 1: 16; and duration for 6 hours. The highest extraction yield and HCA concentration were 51 and 684.49 ug/ml respectively.
