Abstract

DT08/540 stem and DT08/541 leaf are the crude extracts of a plant from the family Thymelaeaceae. This plant is traditionally used in aroma-therapy. The present study sought to evaluate the efficacy and safety of these extracts. Methanol extracts of this plant were evaluated for anti-inflammatory activity based on hyaluronidase lipoxygenase and xanthine oxidase inhibitory assays. The leaf extract DT08/541 showed strong inhibition on hyaluronidase lipoxygenase and xanthine oxidase with inhibition of 96.42 4.08 81.34 0.01and 64. 13 0.01 respectively. However the stem extract DT08/541 exhibited low activity in all assays tested. Cytotoxic effect of the extracts was investigated in vitro using Sulforhodamine B SRB assay on normal kidney Vero and normal liver WRL-68 cell lines. The results showed the median inhibitory concentration IC50 of stem and leaf extracts in both cell lines ranged from 60 ug/ml to 375 ug/ml. Since both extracts showed a IC50 value above 50 ug/ml it could be considered as non-cytotoxic. This study showed that the leaf extracts of this plant could be further explored for potential usage as remedies for inflammation treatment.
