Abstract
The analgesic effect of the Garcinia nigrolineata extract was assessed using the acetic acid-induced abdominal constriction model and formalin test. The extract 60-600 mg/kg caused a dose dependent inhibition on abdominal constriction induced by acetic acid 51.76 - 73.33. The extract also significantly P0.05 inhibited both phases of the formalin test suggesting the direct effect of the extract on the nocciceptor and to some extent an inhibition of endogenous inflammatory mediators. Moreover pre-treatment with naloxone an opioid receptor antagonist failed to modify the analgesic effect of the extract suggesting that the opioid system is not involved in this effect.
