Abstract

The objective of this study is to select the suitable machines that can accommodate the mechanized planting of stevia. Manual planting requires 100 man-hours for one hectare of land. Crop requirements were considered before machine selection was done. Machines that can accommodate small scale farmers and large scale farmers have been selected. Single row transplanter driven by a power tiller and a triple-row transplanter attached to a 4 wheel drive tractor was chosen to be suitable for mechanized stevia transplanting. The pedestrian type transplanter was estimated to transplant 1200 plants per hour while the triple row transplanter performed at 4000 plants per hour. To implement mechanized planting several factors need to be considered such asland preparation and farm layout design.
