Abstract

There are 110 000 coconut farm families in Peninsular Malaysia growing coconut mainly in the coastal of Johor Perak and Selangor with the national average farm size of 1.2 ha. The main variety grown is Malayan Tall with palm age over 50 years producing yield of 1 968 to 3 628 nuts / ha / year. Replanting coconut with hybrid variety MATAG has shown success with yield of 16 000 nuts / ha / year for a seven-year-old coconut palm under field conditions. To ensure successful replanting of coconut the government is requested to build and upgrade drains and farm roads. Farmers also request the government to impose a minimum guaranteed price RM0.80 / nut; to provide fertilizer 500 kg / ha / year cost of living allowance RM300 / family / month for the first four years of the replanting coconut; to provide fund and technical expertise on integrating coconut with cash crops livestock or fish. Farmers support the governments idea on the Central Management Model of farming but are cautious with the competency of the appointed executing agency.
