Processing and quality of activated carbon from coconut shell

Tan Jerry, . (2010) Processing and quality of activated carbon from coconut shell. [Proceedings Paper]

Abstract

Coconut shell activated carbon carbonaceous adsorbent is a black granular form with extensive microscopic internal structures ideal for adsorbtion of molecules in both liquid and gas phases. Coconut shell-based activated carbon consists of more microporous structure inside. There are three types of pores found in the charcoal: i macropores entrance ii mesopores transportation and iii micropores adsorption. The properties of steamprocessed coconut shell activated carbon are: i higher density than coal or wood base carbon ii superior hardness iii extremely microporous iv low ash content v ability to be regenerated and vi non-toxic. This paper also included aspects of activated charcoal processing standards for laboratory testing applications of activated carbon types and quality characteristic of activated charcoal to meet market requirements.
