Abdul Rahman Abdul Rahim, . (2010) Trade and marketing of Malaysian coconut. [Proceedings Paper]

Abstract

The local coconut industry is gaining importance in future. This is due to the involvement of 70 000 to 80 000 smallholders which comprise of 75 of total production sector. Due to the small size of farms about 1 to 3 hectares per family and the old aged trees of more than 50 years from the Malaysian Tall variety this has given rise to the problems of harvesting. The high cost of harvesting low yield scattered farms far from collection centres lack of infrastructures all these require special marketing efforts. Lastly the income received by smallholders is low despite the difficulty of factories in obtaining their secure supplies of local nuts. This leads to the temporary importation of nuts from Indonesia. FAMAs involvement in the marketing of coconuts has created significant rise in the income of smallholders.
