Abstract

A study was conducted to compare the growth and yield of jatropha planted in the open with those shaded by matured coconut. The jatropha plants grown under coconut shade were thinner and produced less primary and secondary branches compared to plants in the open. Flowering was delayed for plants under shade and they produced less flower. Consequently fruit production was delayed production starts only on 34th week after transplanting W AT compared to 25th W A T for unshaded plants. Growth and yield of jatropha were significantly reduced when grown under old coconut trees. Thus to optimize land utilization and photosynthesis intercropping is tenable only if jatrophas are planted in between new coconut plantings not as undergrowth.
