Abstract
This paper presents the results of an experimental study on the effects of concrete reinforced with coconut midribs. The coconut midribs used for this study were cut to be 25mm long and the water/cement ratio was kept constant at 0.43 for all mixes. The mixtures were grouped base on the different percentage of fibres added in concrete which are 0 0.02 4 and 6 respectively. The percentage of midrib is calculated accordance to the weight of cement. The density compressive strength and water absorption of midrib-reinforced concrete were determined and compared with those of conventional concrete. The effects of various midrib contents on the above properties were analysed and findings were drawn from this research. Firstly the density of the reinforced concrete decreases with the increase of midrib contents. Secondly the addition of 2 coconut midribs slightly improves the compressive strength from 46.16 kN/m2 to 46.58 kN/m2 but further addition of midrib did not efficiently increase the strength. Lastly the water absorption increased with the addition of coconut midribs. Overall it can be concluded that the usage of coconut midribs has potential to improve the density and compressive strength characteristics of concrete though the addition of coconut midribs resulted in more permeable concrete.
