Abstract

This study was carried out to evaluate and compare the efficiency of two techniques for veo extraction namely using an improved hydraulic operated oil expeller and a screw-type oil expeller. Grated kernel obtained from ten mature local tall coconuts were used for the oil extraction. The experiment was replicated three times. Both the wet and dry weight of the grated coconut kernel was recorded as well as the weight of the pressed cake and the veo obtained after extraction. The efficiencies of the oil expellers are expressed as the percentage ofVeO being extracted from the sun-dried grated kernel. It was found that the efficiency of the improved hydraulic operated oil expeller was 93.5 while that of the screw-type operated expeller was 85.3. Percentage of oil recovery based on fresh sun-dried coconut kernel with the improved hydraulic operated oil expeller and the screw-type oil expeller method were 23.21 and 13.27 respectively. The improved oil expeller was found to be more efficient as compared to the other two methods.
