Abstract

Malaysia is blessed with a large number of timber species and it is not difficult to find a suitable timber species/group that meets the technical and aesthetic requirements of almost all applications. However with the general decline in log production the timber industry is facing a shortage of specific species/timber group and increasing timber prices. The total log production in Peninsular Malaysia excluding Rubberwood had declined from 11.2 million m3 in 1992 to 4.7 million m3 in 2006. This poses some difficulties for manufacturers to collect a substantial volume of a single timber species/group and process them efficiently. Currently the moulding sector is facing difficulty in getting the supply of Red Merantis. This paper explores the trend of timber production and suggests suitable timber species/groups that may be used to compensate substitute for the reduction in the volume of Red Merantis for the moulding sector.
