Abstract

Radio-frequency-vacuum RF drying is an expensive system but with the current high timber prices this may be an affordable alternative drying process if the dried-timber quality is good for specialized applications. The advantages of employing dielectric heating are rapid and fairly uniform heat transfer often to solidly stacked timbers very high drying rates and less drying defects such as case-hardening and oxidative discoloration of the wood. In this study 30 x 120 mm kekatong Cynometra spp. was RFdried from 34.1 to 12.9 MC in less than 7 days; on the other hand it took about 14 days to dry the timber from 33.8 to 10.3 in the conventional steam-heated kiln-drying system KD. The drying time of kekatong using RF system may be further reduced by increasing the input current to the generator and/or vacuum. Generally the drying quality of kekatong by RF system was comparable with that of KD with low shrinkage values.
