Abstract

Preliminary evaluation of the production of pulp from oil palm trunk using micro-organisms was carried out based on yield Kappa number and the strength of the paper produced. The fungi used in this study were cultured and isolated from oil palm trunk unknown strains from oil palm trunk and Fomitopsis palustris white rot. The oil palm trunk obtained from a nearby plantation was reduced to chips of about 3 x 3 x 1 cm thickness. The chips were then pretreated by exposures to various fungi for 9 to 72 days. After the pretreatments the chips were pulped mechanically. The samples without fungi were used as control. The pulp and screened yields were found to decrease as the period of exposure to the microorganisms increased. However the Kappa number became lower after longer exposure.
