Abstract

Dowel-bearing strength embedment strength is a critical characteristic of wood connection design. The connection design strength is based on the yield theory that relates connection performance to fastener-bending strength and dowel-bearing strength. This study investigated the dowel-bearing strength of kempas Koompassia malaccensis loaded parallel to the grain using three different dowel materials namely wood steel and glass-fibre reinforced plastic GFRP. It was aimed to determine the effect of different types of dowel 12.7 mm in diameter on the bearing strength. The bearing-strength test was performed in accordance with ASTM D 5764-95. A digital microscope was used to observe the cracks and splits discovered in non-metallic dowels and wood block specimens. Data analysed at 5 offset yield of load-displacement showed that bearing strength of kempas embedded with steel dowel was higher than the bearing strength embedded with GFRP or wood dowel.
