Abstract
Duabanga moluccana and Endospermum diadenum from secondary forests of Sabah Forest Reserve were converted to single-layer particleboards at three densities: 600 700 and 800 kg m-3 using 10 urea formaldehyde and oriented strandboards of three layers at targeted density of 600 kg m-3 using two different resin contents of 4 and 7 phenol formaldehyde. The particleboards made from D. moluccana exhibited higher average values for all three board densities in terms of modulus of elasticity modulus of rupture and internal bond compared with particleboards made from E. diadenum. The highest average modulus of elasticity 2152 N mm-2 modulus of rupture 23 N mm-2 and internal bond 0.87 N mm-2 were seen in D. moluccana particleboard at 800 kg m-3 and generally the mechanical properties increased with increasing board density. A reverse trend was observed for oriented strand boards where E. diadenum board using 7 phenol-formaldehyde resin showed higher average mechanical properties compared with boards made from D. moluccana. Thickness swelling and water absorption were lowest for oriented strand boards made from E. diadenum at 7 PF resin. Mechanical properties and dimensional stability of oriented strand board made from E. diadenum at both 4 and 7 PF resin satisfied the minimum requirement of the Japanese Industrial Standard JISA5809:1994 24-10 type.
