Abstract

A study of the effects of different resin types and resin contents on the strength behaviour of single-layer particleboard from Leucaena leucocephala was conducted. Boards of 12-mm thickness with dimensions of 340 x 340 mm and targeted density of 700 kg m-3 were produced. Types of resin used were urea formaldehyde UF and melamine-urea formaldehyde MUF and resin contents were 8 and 12. The strength properties evaluated were modulus of elasticity MOE and modulus of rupture MOR in bending and internal bonding IB. The tests were conducted according to BS EN: 1996. Particleboard made with 12 MUF exhibited the highest MOE value 2287 N mm-2 and the lowest MOE value was from particleboard made with 8 UF 1958 N mm-2. Particleboard made with 12 MUF gave the highest MOR value 17.25 N mm-2 compared with that made with 8 UF 8.09 N mm-2. Similar to MOE and MOR particleboard made with 12 MUF exhibited the highest IB mean value of 0.64 N mm-2 compared with the others. It can be concluded that particleboards bonded with MUF resin were better than those bonded with UF. Due to the presence of melamine in MUF the resistance to mechanical loads increased. The higher resin content means more resin is available to cover the surfaces of the particles.
