[Proceedings Paper]
Abstract
The use of oil palm trunk as raw material for panel products has increased significantly. A study was conducted to evaluate the shear strength and dimensional stability of oil palm laminated veneer lumber made using four types of adhesive that included phenol formaldehyde PF phenol-resorcinol formaldehyde PRF urea formaldehyde UF and melamine-urea formaldehyde MUF. Experimental oil palm trunk OPT laminated veneer lumber samples were manufactured based on two spread levels of 250 and 500 g m-2 Laminated veneer lumber made from rubberwood was used as control. The results showed that panels made using phenol-resorcinol formaldehyde PRF with 500 g m-2 spread level gave higher shear strength for both panels made from oil palm and rubberwood. The results showed that panels made from rubberwood control had better dimensional stability than oil palm panels. Comparing between panels made from oil palm veneer it was found that panels made using phenolresorcinol formaldehyde had good dimensional stability for both spread levels. Good dimensional stability means that the panel has minimum water absorption and thickness swelling.
