Abstract

The antifungal activities of methanol extracts from some Malaysian timbers against brown-rot and white-rot fungi were studied. The fungi that were used were Gleophyllum trabeum MI-102 for brown rot and Pycnoporus sanguineus KUM 70097 for white rot. The timber species studied were keranji kuning kecil gerutugerutu machang-machang medang kemangi medang daun lebar sesendok meranti pipit meranti sarang punai mempelam petai-petai meranti melantai chengal kembang semangkok jantung and ara berteh bukit. The potato dextrose agar PDA method was used to test the antifungal activities of the extracts at 50 ug ml-1 concentration in methanol. The antifungal activities against G. trabeum MI-102 showed inhibition zones for extracts of gerutu-gerutu sapwood petai-petai bark meranti pipit bark chengal bark mempelam heartwood sesendok inner wood and all parts of medang kemangi while those against P. sanguine us KUM 70097 showed inhibition zones for extracts of keranji kuning kecil sapwood gerutu-gerutu sapwood and heartwood meranti sarang punai sapwood and heartwood mempelam bark machang-machang bark and inner wood meranti melantai bark medang daun lebar bark meranti pipit bark and sapwood chengal bark and all parts of medang kemangi and sesendok.
