Abstract

Activated carbon was prepared from bamboo waste using steam at a high temperature 650-800 C in this work. There are twostage processes to produce activated carbon pyrolysis followed by activation. The first step is to enrich the carbon content and to create an initial porosity and the activation process helps in enhancing the pore structure. Steam activation at higher temperature gave better activation and enhanced widening of the narrow micropore network. Experiments were conducted at a bench-scale activation unit to investigate the influence of various process parameters such as activation time and activation temperature on the quality of the activated carbon. Laboratory experiments were conducted for iodine number to check the quality of the activated carbon. Results showed that the iodine number increased with increase of activation temperature and time. Thus the best activated carbon was obtained at activation temperature of 800 C and activated time of 3 h.
