Abstract
Steam-heated drying and RF-vacuum drying are among the methods used for drying timber. Timber drying involves the establishment of kiln plants which requires large capital investment. The economics of the kiln-drying operation thus needs to be determined by considering the cost elements so that the timber-drying industry could be sustained efficiently. From the assessment the conventional drying facility using steam-heated dryer incurs a much higher cost. But the cost per unit of drying is significantly higher for the RF-vacuum dryingRM385.13 t1 as compared with RM89.25 t-1 for the steamheated drying almost five folds. The costs in terms of volume are RM545 m-3 and RM126.30 m-3 respectively.
