Abstract

Many cities across the globe are setting aside urban green space as important phenomena to host special events and at the same time act as contributors to quality of life and city comfort. Urban forestry is a crucial element in helping to realise these efforts whether to commemorate sports and recreations events or to celebrate special days such as Landscape Day Arbor Day Special Life Moments Heritage Tree Celebrations and others. One notable effort was the creation of parks and urban forest in conjunction with the hosting of the summer and winter Olympic games which benefited not only athletes but local population as well. These efforts have put urban forests as an environmental platform to a world stage. Malaysia being the first Asian country to host the Commonwealth Games in 1998 takes pride in having a sports complex in a park planted with different tree species to celebrate the events. In Beijing for example urban forestry and beautification programs are a significant component of Green Olympic Games in 2008. As the backdrop of Green Olympic Games Beijings environment reflects directly the concept of green and suitability for residence.
