Aldous D Uni. of Queensland, . (2010) Challenges in Southeast Asian green tourism. [Proceedings Paper]
Abstract
In many countries tourism accounts for a significant proportion of the gross. national product employment opportunities and value-added services. While ecotourism has largely focused on natural and rural areas urban green tourism has largely focused on green spaces in an urban environment. Urban green tourism has grown at an annual rate of between 10-30 percent in North America. Some of the reasons for the growth might have be attributed by the peoples love of nature and the awareness that green space can make in conserving the earths natural resources improving the levels of biodiversity and protecting the planet against the agents of climate change. Most Southeast Asian cities are conscious of the importance of sustainability in urban green tourism development with their respective governments ensuring that tourism projects yield economic benefits yet remain appropriate to their social and cultural context as well as remaining sensitive to their environment. The author discusses the challenges facing the tourism industry as it moves towards a more sustainable operating base.
