Abstract
Urban parks or green spaces provide recreational ecological social and psychological benefits to people living in the cities. These urban green spaces are very important in compact metropolitan cities such as Hong Kong. In Hong Kong urban parks and green spaces are fragmented and isolated and seldom are there linkages connecting green spaces. Meanwhile there are increasing numbers of studies showing that the interconnected green spaces in urban area are better than those without connection. There are many benefits brought by the cormected green space in cities. For instance previous studies show that once a park connector network is formed the urban parks can then be fully utilized. This is an empirical study with data collected by on-site interviews of park users. The aim is to assess their usage and perceptions towards the parks as well as the surrounding environment. The preliminary findings of the study revealed that most of the respondents would like to see more interconnected greenways in their communities. Overall the goal of this study is to establish both the conceptual framework and a practical solution for the establishment of park connectors in the Kwun Tong District Hong Kong China. The findings might provide useful information for urban planners/designers to find ways to improve the urban environment and to enhance the quality of living of the people in the city. This community level research could also be promoted to a bigger scale so that we could build a more sustainable city for people to live.
