Abstract

Highly pathogenic avian influenza HPAi virus is enzootic in poultry in Asia and has caused more than 250 fatal human infections. Currently this region is still battling against H5N1 and the virus has been isolated in non-poultry birds in more than 60 countries. These development have ignited global fears of and imminent influenza pandemic. The use of vaccines to control H5N1 in poultry is a highly debated topic due to the concerns about the possibility of an increased risk of viral spread before outbreak can be detected. Nevertheless the need to enhance eradication strategies and the advances in modern vaccine technologies has prompted a re-evaluation of the potential use of vaccination in poultry as an additional too; in disease control strategies. This summary describes information pertinent to the use of vaccines to control H5N1 in poultry.
