Abstract

The slogan Healthy Animals Safe Foods Healthy Man was encountered at an international symposium in Stockholm back in 1989. Today 20 years on the slogan still holds true. This is particularly true because human health is inextricably linked to animal health and production. However such link has serious implications to public health and severe economic consequences. As reported by WHO about 75 of the new diseases that have affected humans over the last decade were caused by zoonotic pathogens originating from animals or animal products. A number of these diseases have become global problems and these include Avian Influenza AI H5NI and severe acute respiratory syndrome SARS. The inappropriate use of veterinary drugs including antibiotics in animals has led to the presence of residues in food animal products and the development of antibiotic resistance in bacteria. The issues on antibiotic resistance are of public health concern not only in animals but also in human populations as treatment of diseases may be compromised by the multidrug resistant pathogens. The feed given to food-producing animals can also be a source of residues such as mycotoxins chemicals and heavy metals. In Malaysia the Department of Veterinary Services DVS Ministry of Health MoH academic institutions and animal-related agencies are working closely together in putting efforts to meet the needs ofthe society industries and environment. Under DVS Programs for Prevention Control and Eradication of Animal Diseases such as for foot and mouth disease Johnes disease avian salmonellosis as well as Emergency Response System for Outbreak of Animal Diseases are in place. The Interministerial Intergovernmental Committee on Control of Zoonoses carries out surveillance on fifteen diseases namely highly phogenic avian influenza HPAI rabies nipah virus infection brucellosis tuberculosis bovine spongiform encephalopathy BSE / CJD influenza human swine equine anthrax Japanese encephalitis leptospirosis toxoplasmosis Q fever Rift Valley Fever filariasis and yellow fever and three pathogens Salmonella Enteritidis and S. Typhimurium vancomycin resistant enterococci and hanta virus. The committee/task force on antimicrobial resistance Food Safety and Quality Division MoH and the committee on veterinary drug residues in foods DVS discuss and act on related issues as well as meet with various agencies at intergovernmental level. Hence it is important for veterinarians.to relentlessly contribute continuously to the maintenance and promotion of human health and well-being by playing a major role in the prevention and control of animal diseases including zoonoses in food companion and recreational animals. This is to ensure safety and wholesomeness of food animal products a prudent use of veterinary drugs. It needs to be emphasized that the collaboration of all agencies is important to ensure animal health for safety of man. It was reported and agreed many that healthy and well-nourished animals yield more and better animal food products. With the advent of improved technologies processing and handling practices safer and better quality foods can be produced and subsequently improve the health of man. Healthy companion and recreational animals pose less or no risk to humans. Lastly as a veterinarian in pursuit of well-being of man one should always be aware and take active interest in ensuring animal welfare and improve animal environments.
