Abstract
Baeckea frutescens L. is a shrub or small tree of the family Myrtaceae locally known as cucur atap found in Sumatra the Malay Peninsula and the coasts of southern China to Australia. The leaves of B. frutescens were extracted using methanol and fractionated to hexane chloroform ethyl acetate and water fractions. The extract and fractions were then tested in vitro against anti-inflammatory and antioxidant bioassays. The antiinflammatory activities were evaluated using three enzyme based assays including hyaluronidase lipoxygenase and xanthine oxidase. The antioxidant activities were analyzed via DPPH radical scavenging assay and superoxide scavenging assay. Various degrees of inhibitions towards all enzymes for anti-inflammatory activities were observed. The most significant activity noted was from the methanol extract in lipoxygenase assay 76.673.28. Ethyl acetate fraction on the other hand showed moderate activity in xanthine oxidase assay. Additionally extract and all fractions from B. frustescens leaves showed high activity in the two anti-oxidant assays.
