Abstract
Cinnamomum zeylanicum Blume belongs to the family Lauraceae. Besides its aroma therapeutic properties it is also a well known remedy for rheumatism and arthiritis related pain and skin diseases. Essential oils from C. zeylanicum have shown high anti-microbial activities. The aim of this study is to determine the suitability of the extract of C. zeylanicum to be developed into personal care products. The extract of C. zeylanicum was formulated into oil-in-water emulsion o/w which consists of emulsifier emollient preservative water with C. zeylanicum essential oil as the active ingredient. The emulsion was homogenized into emulsion using high speed homogenizer. The sizes of particles obtained in the emulsion were in the range of 10.88 u.m - 92.71 u.m. From the stability test the emulsion showed no separation when it was kept at temperatures of 4 28 and 40C for three months. Evaluation on the physico-chemistry characteristics showed that the pH value of the emulsion was in suitable range for topical usage and the rheology property of the emulsion was recorded. Microbial enumeration of the emulsion was determined by total plate count and showed it was free from microbial contamination.
