Abstract
The aromatic lemongrass Cymbopogon citratus is an herbaceous tropical perennial belonging to the family Gramineae. Fresh lemongrass stems are used for flavouring as a seasoning and much valued for its essential oil. Powder extract is also lucrative because of its large commercial potential both locally and for export. Due to the high demands in the market the mechanization aspects of lemongrass production are required to pave the way to fulfil the market needs. Mechanization has been one solution to counter issues such as labour shortage and low production rate in the agriculture sector. The adaptation of mechanization system should lower the cost of production improve quality and also reduce labour needs. Machinery application in lemongrass production is essential especially during planting and harvesting. Current practice relies on a traditional method which is high cost since it requires a lot of man power as well as sluggish technique. By using the mechanical transplanter it is able to create planting interval of 55-80 cm within row with overall working rate of 2-4 h/ha at single row planting. However the recommended planting distance for lemongrass is 80x150 cm. The planter used 20-25 cm long planting materials with planting depth of 5-10 cm. Meanwhile the API harvester used for harvesting activities had been proven to be efficient and workable with good quality harvest with minimal stem injury. Recorded working rate was 2-4 h/ha powered by an 80 hp 4 wheeled tractor.
