Abstract
OISCA International an international NGO born in Japan a half century ago has been working on rehabilitation of tropical rainforest including coastal forest in Indonesia for the last 20 years. The reforestation activities cover most of Java Island as well as parts of Sumatera and the islands of West and East Nusa Tenggara Provinces. OISCA has successfully managed to convert 2 300 hectares of deforested land into green zone with 2 520 000 seedlings so far. As the world;s most populous island Java has very limited space and therefore efforts of ecological conservation are often overwhelmed by economic necessity in local communities. In order to effectively involve a local community to reforestation activity and realize sustainable forest management by the locals OISCA has adopted comprehensive community development approaches. The approaches include tree planting activity community empowerment through introduction of environmentally-friendly farming systems environmental education to communities especially schoolchildren capacity building training for local youths and support to community infrastructure improvement.
