Abstract

Sarawak is the first state in Malaysia to introduce a biodiversity law in 1997 to protect and manage it biological resources. The Sarawak Biodiversity Centre SBC was subsequently established in 1998 to implement regulatory and research activities related to the biodiversity. One of the research programmes at SBC is the establishment of a Natural Product Library NPL which is a depository of microbial strains and their extracts as well as extracts of indigenous plants for research and development. Microbes have many useful applications in a variety of industrial sectors including pharmaceutical agriculture food environment and energy. Microbes from SBC;s NPL are studied in terms of their diversity and their chemical constituents to be developed for applications in industries with strategic partners and collaborators.
