Abstract

A new method to convert biomass into valuable chemicals is described in this work. Empty palm fruit bunch EPFB was chemically pretreated to concentrated lignocellulose before being pyrolyzed. The vapor was condensed to produce gas and liquid products. GC-MS analysis revealed the organics liquid products OLP containing mixtures of esters and acids with minimal phenolic content. The yield of OLP from the concentrated lignin was 57. Upgrading of the oil produced two liquid layers i.e. a rich hydrocarbon phase in the upper layer with 22 wt yield and a rich ester base at the bottom. The new method provides an alternative method to produce important chemicals and fuels from agricultural waste.
