Abstract
Enrichment planting is a method of silvicultural management that rehabilitates poorly stocked logged-over forest. Improved planting technique is one of the potential rehabilitation methods. The technical issues like line planting technique gap planting spacing species-site matching are crucially related to the success of rehabilitation effort. Different factors are directly or indirectly related to the success of it. These factors affect the overall performance of the planted trees. The focus of this study was to relate the growth performance of Chengal stands planted using improved planting techniques to the ecophysiological aspects. A total of 540 Chengal saplings were planted in a study plot Compartment 89B Tekai Forest Reserve Jerantut using improved planting techniques. The plot was established in September 2008. The tree planting was a success since the survival rate after 22 months planting was 94.3 and the monthly height and diameter increment were 5 and 0.5 cm respectively. After 40 months of planting the survival rate was still high 89. Meanwhile the monthly height and diameter increment were 4.03 and 0.4 cm respectively. The ecophysiological aspects measurements such as the photosynthetic rate transpiration rate and stomatal conductance were determined using Li-Cor 6400. The photosynthetic rate recorded was at average of 5.45 Ilmolm-2 S-1. The transpiration rate was 2.56 mmolm-2 S-1. Meanwhile the stomatal conductance was 0.23 umolm-2 S-1. Improved planting techniques have contributed to good growth performance that led to an increase in resource base. This study is hoped to be a benchmark for heavy hardwoods which is known to have slow growth rate such as chengal to be planted in logged-over forest.
