Abstract

Borneo Island is one of the centers for biodiversity in Asia and it is home to huge number of bananas including wild and indigenous species. A survey was conducted in 2010 to determine the distribution of wild banana in Sarawak for breeding program. Results of the study showed that Musa acuminata var. microcarpa Becc. Nasution and M. borneensis Becc. var. borneensis were new records for Miri and Belaga in 2010 respectively. Both banana species were found in disturbed forest areas due to agriculture and logging activities. Further exploration by local and international scientists need to be conducted frequently to update information on banana distribution and diversity.
