Abstract
Biodiversity is a vital parameter for assessing global and local environmental changes and sustainability of development activities. For protection of biodiversity initiative should be taken to register the existing scenario of biodiversity at local level followed by finding out the root causes of biodiversity loss. Insect diversity is now faced with habitat degradation species extinction and a decline in the natural enemies of harmful pests. In the Oriental Region including Malaysia report and study on Diptera are still lacking. This paper reports an initiative to estimate diversity of Diptera in reserve forest. This paper also reports the relationship between diversity of Diptera and the changes in environmental gradient from forest fringe to the inner forest. The study site was at Kuala Lompat Krau Wildlife Reserve Forest. Samplings were conducted using Malaise traps. Three trails were established which were: Trail A and Trail B represented the inner forest and Trail C represented the forest fringe. A total of 957 of Diptera comprising 15 families and 25 species morphospecies were collected. Diptera were most abundant in Trail A with 526 individuals collected 14 subfamilies 22 species while Trail C had the least abundance with 190 individuals 14 subfamilies 20 species. Culicidae was the most abundant families found in this study area with 494 individuals. There was no significant interaction P0.05 on the total morphospecies and abundance of individual. per family from all study site. Trail C had the highest diversity index H; 2.65 while Trail B H;1.75 had the lowest diversity. The H; value are not significantly different P0.05 between Trail A and Trail B Trail A and Trail C and between Trail Band C. This study suggests that diversity and abundance of Diptera were high in forest fringe compared to the inner forest.
