Abstract

Exploitation of genes from Elaeis oleifera to increase unsaturation in Elaeis guineensis oil is carried out in interspecific hybrid breeding programmes. It is an extremely slow process due to the long breeding cycle. In addition the complexity of the genes controlling the traits hampers rapid production of improved planting materials. Recognizing the tremendous potential of DNA markers in plant breeding MPOB has adopted the strategy of constructing a linkage map using a oleifera x guineensis OxG cross. Significant correlation was found between a RFLP marker CB75A with QTLs quantitative trait loci for IV and FAC in oil palm. Preliminary result on validation of CB75A indicates its potential use in breeding and selection for development of higher unsaturated palm oil.
