Abstract

MPOB as the leader in the oil palm industry is in continuous search for trait of economic importance that will meet the demand from the industry. Ten traits had been identified including long stalk in the MPOB strategic plan for fast track breeding programme which includes tissue culture strategy. Besides that MPOB Breeding Programme is also committed to produce quality animal feed that will benefit the livestock industry in Malaysia. The high protein kernel cake can be used to replace imported feed ingredient such as soybean corn and other grains. This paper deliberates the genetic variation of these two traits in the germplasm. Genetic variations are the raw materials for future breeding and development of a trait. Traits with high genetic variation and heritability may expedite their development as commercial materials.
