Abstract
Conservation of genetic resources in seed banks is widely used for storage of many plant species, but conservation of Citrus seeds poses serious limitations. From earlier studies on tolerance of Citrus seeds to desiccation and cryopreservation, some were found to be tolerant while others were only partially tolerant. Citrus genetic resources are currently conserved as whole plants in field genebanks where they remain exposed to pests, diseases and other natural hazards. The use of in vitro culture techniques, including normal and slow growth and cryopreservation, offers important additional options for the conservation of these plant species. Techniques using various culture systems such as seed, embryo, ovule, shoot tip, cell and embryogenic callus will be discussed and some examples of cryopreservation studies on local Citrus species will be presented.
