Abstract

Increasing interest in high quality food products with increased shelf life and reduced environmental impact has encouraged the study and development of edible films. Edible films provide the opportunity to effectively control mass transfer among different components in a food or between the foods and its surrounding environment. Sago and corn starch blend films treated with ultraviolet UV at different exposure time have been developed. Control and treated films were evaluated for thickness mechanical strength and water vapor permeability. The aim of this work was to confirm the hypothesis that UV treatment could modify the properties of starch films. The tensile strength of films was increased significantly with exposure time. The results of this research suggest that UV treatment has the potential to improve the properties of film.
