Abstract

The pulp and paper industry is recognized as one of the most polluting industries due to especially the generation of chlorinated organic compounds such as chlorinated furans and dioxins which are persistent pollutant in conventional bleaching sequences using elemental chlorine and its compounds as bleaching agents. To approach sustainable development in pulp and paper industry in this study full bleached pulp was produced from oil palm Elaeis guineensis empty fruit bunch EFB fiber by using totally chlorine-free TCF bleaching sequences. Bleaching stages namely oxygen delignification O peracetic acid treatment Pa acid treatment A chelation Q ozone Z hydrogen peroxide bleaching P and pressurized peroxide Po were used to design various bleaching sequences. The results showed that EFB soda-anthraquinone pulp enabled to achieve ISO brightness more than 80 and retained acceptable high pulp viscosity 12.0 c.P. by using simple TCF bleaching sequences OpOpAPo OpOpQPo even though the resultant pulps retained rather high kappa number 3.2-4.5. This indicated that simple TCF sequences are feasible to be adopted to EFB soda-anthraquinone pulp in producing high brightness pulp.
