Abstract

The Department of Irrigation and Drainage DID provides drainage facilities in terms of infrastructures ranging from river canalization to ditch improvement and from large tidal structures and barrages in the river outlets to small drainage controls in the hinterland to some 650 000 hectares of land. To achieve the planned objectives of the schemes DID has certain sets of operation and maintenance rules though most of them are manned by resident gate-keepers. In view of the large number as well as vast areas and coupled with remote locations the most optimum results have not been attained. DID has plans to upgrade modernize and improve the present practice. This paper will describe the types of instrumentation currently developed in DID and indicate the future trend of centralised control telemetry system suitable for the new agriculture drainage system that would be adopted by the DID.
