Abstract

The study was conducted in the month of April 1999 in the waters around Pulau Payar on the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia. The purpose of the study was to assess the total suspended solid levels at 12 stations surrounding the island. The study consisted of a randomized design with 12 stations at predetermined locations. Stations 1 2 3 4 and 5 were sites frequented by tourists. Water samples were collected using an Alpha bottle from each station and analyzed for TSS. The TSS levels at all the stations were generally lower than the criteria level set under the ASEAN Water Quality Standards except for a few exceedances above 10 mg/L. Statistical analysis using ANOVA indicated that the TSS levels were not significantly different for the stations and samples. This study indicated that the levels ofTSS did not differ spatially or temporally. Similar studies will be conducted in the future to ensure that the waters off Pulau Payar will continue to be in a pristine state.
